Or
Without this, I will not remember
Last year at this time I wrote this:
http://wolfmann.blogspot.com/2004/12/its-that-no-mans-land-time-of-year.html#links
Sometimes actions precede meaning in my life. It will take me a while to figure out what I’m up to and then…bam: Meaning! I’m not just sleepwalking after all! Well, I’m finally seeing the point to all this bloggy business. It’s not exactly therapy, and it does not exist for angry exes to peruse while they guess how much weight I’ve gained in the past 10 years (if you guessed 13 pounds, then you are correct), and it’s not there for hurt girlfriends of those exes (of even lower self-esteem than me) to project their unfounded accusations upon, and it’s really not even there as an excuse for not keeping in touch with my friends and loved ones (“What did you mean you didn’t know that I had a sex change? Haven’t you read my blog?”).
Just this morning, I realized that this blog is the best interactive, multi-media, all-inclusive recording device that I could possibly get my hands on. Screw photo albums (my obsession from 1992-98), paper journals (source of guilt and neglect between 1999-2001), and even letter-writing (I was never that good at that…and I never made photocopies before sending them anyway). It’s all been on the blog since 10.23.03 and as long as the big server in the sky doesn’t go, then my memories, pictures, links, and friends’ comments are all safe and sound and even searchable! Where was I the day of May 29, 2004? I don’t know, let me see…oh! Garage sailing with Ukiah Adam and tormenting Jason Proctor with a framed carpet rendition of a Marlin! Of course.
My memory…well, it’s pretty bad. It’s most likely a result of media-overload, long hours in the office, prolonged use of prescribed anti-depressants, a head injury I sustained at 13…uh, I guess the brain cells have been stacked against me. Without a record of my life, it might be really easy for me to forget what an amazing life it’s been.
Thank you to those who have been part of it all, who have reminded me of things I have forgotten, and who plan to make new memories with me (and then will remind me about those at a later date).

Of course, the toilet isn't broken anymore and the hole in the wall must have been repaired, but I really dug Brett's "those were the days" stories about the early 90's! Tall Tales of the Purple Onion.
From "8 Days a Week":
Finally, an album! Eight years is a long time to be teased, but the Flakes have kept their Bay Area (and beyond) fan base in full-length darkness, only releasing a handful of singles ... until now. Back to School (Dollar Record) marks the band's first comprehensive, and extremely tardy, record. Although the band is knee-deep in "ex"-es, (ex-Mummies, ex-Count Backwurds, ex-Bobbyteens, ex-Loose Lips), this record is evidence that the Flakes have no plans for dismemberment. If you haven't seen the Flakes' 10,392 other San Francisco performances, prepare yourself for a night of '60s and '70s rock 'n' roll nostalgia, complete with excessive freak-beats and teeth-mashing nastiness in the style of the Hypstrz, DMZ, and Shadows of Knight. Del Lames and the Pyroclastics also play. 9 p.m., Parkside, SF. $7. (415) 503-0393. (Yu)So go to their show Saturday and buy an album!

Over the years, though, the Purple Onion passed through a string of owners, and the club experienced a steady decline. By the time it closed in the mid-1990s, it had become a chaotically run punk music venue.
Some affectionate regulars from this period might have considered it the club's finest. For Mario, it was a sign that the Purple Onion was reaching rock-bottom. "That's when the place started to go down," Mario says. "Everything was broken – broken toilet, a hole-in-the-wall. The place was like a dump."
There is some pride in knowing that Brett and his friends did that.
See you there tonight!

Good question. Somewhere in South East Portland in my friend Dory's apartment. The sky outside is completely without color and it will most likely snow tomorrow. After a month of illness and workaholism, staying inside with nothing to do but look out of the window in a strange North West state is exactly what the doctor ordered. That and some really strong antibiotics, which are finally starting to work.
Today is Dory's 30th birthday, but she still had to go to work.
When we met, we were 14 and I wasn't even planning on living this long. I was pretty sure that I'd have published my "great anti-American novel" (as I used to say then) by the age of 23 and then go down in a blaze of infamy, partying, writing, and visiting a man in every port. My death would be dramatic and an unfairly early demise, but at least there wouldn't be a wrinkle on my face. By the time we hit 30, I guess we're just happy to have lived through the bouts of partying that we have had and hope to continue forward in a blaze of mediocrity, keeping depression and illness at bay and grasping onto the ones we love.
I haven't written the "great anti-American novel" yet and I'm not sure if I will. My attention span is more suited for the longish-short story anyway or maybe just the spoken word (delivered on stage in my underwear). I'm very thankful to have loved ones to grasp onto and I think that we write our own great novels together through time and experience. The anti-American part seems to be taking care of itself at a federal government level.

Yesterday, Susan alerted me to the fact that she saw me and Rose Pistola in the garbage can at her friend’s house. It turns out that The Haight Ashbury Beat, much esteemed neighborhood rag, published a review of our October 13th Little Minsky’s show at the Deluxe!

Schlock Obsessed a Boo Boo
I was talking with Aimee the other day on the N Train (where I spend most of my free time these days) about films that we’ve seen since Halloween. Here's my accomplished list:
Satanis (1970), with Anton LaVey as himself.
Rat Pfink a Boo Boo (1966). Ray Dennis Steckler, you rule.
Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) at The Castro Theater for the Creature Feature’s show!
The Italian Job (1969). So many cars, so many crashes.
Mondo Mod (1967). Karate is so mod.
Girl in the Gold Boots (1969)… the glamorous world of Go-Go dancing on a $5.00 budget.

October wrung it right out of me and now I’m sick sick sick! I actually stayed home on Halloween and watched it unfold on the news. The whole household is sick. The drink of the house has been switched from kosher wine to Thereflu. What can you do?
But that’s not the worst of it…I’m too sick to go see They Might Be Giants tonight! AND I found out that Christopher Walken is not running for president!
At least staying home tonight will insure that I get to see The OC, which will play one of Citizens Here and Abroad's songs! Way to go Adrienne -- who is abroad right now and happens to be a broad.

I'm walking down the street towards Go Go Sushi (because the insect index is WAY up at Lee's Deli) and this guy carrying a huge bag of flowers and presents stops me on the street. He wants me to bring it up to his wife's office for him so she'll be surprised for her birthday. I kind of don't get the concept at first, probably because it's 2:00 pm and I haven't eaten yet and maybe because I'm still functioning on the whole October-entertainment-lack-of-sleep thing and possibly because I've taken 2 Midrin so far today and it could be because I'm still going over a case from work in my head...but he waves a ten dollar bill at me, pushed the package into my arms, and soon I'm in an elevator in a strange building, delivering a bag of birthday surprises to an electrical engineer. She's happy, he's happy...I go to vegetarian sushi on them. Lee's still sucks.
Forget iPods...I want a portable Scopitone player!

Today was going to be my rare opportunity to sleep in on a week day, but at exactly 8:00 am enter THE ROOF REPAIR MEN! Argggg! I was forced to get up and be productive so I worked out a pretty elaborate gag for Thursday's Little Minsky's show. I think I've got that under control now (note to self: wash blood and bone fragments out of carpet before roommate gets home. KIDDING!), so I'm thinking I'll head to the beach and get away from all the roof noise.
Or maybe I'll just look at this picture all day:

Ok. I didn't really write a song for you, but I can direct you to a few good ones if you are interested.
1. First, I'd start of with "King Tut". Everyone knows that he was buried in his jammies and that he died for tourism, but did you know that The Hamboogers covered this Steve Martin classic while opening for The Donnas in Pioneer Town (a ghost town of a film set of a ghost town in Yucca Valley)? Strange-but-true fact. The Donnas' fans loved it. I loved it. King Tut loved it.
Here are The Hamboogers:
Russell Quan: Stud.
The Italians.
And this guy is Steve Stiletto, but doesn't he look sort of familiar? OH! It's Bowser!
The Hamboogers' groupies. (Where's our drink tickets?)
And The Donnas. What nice girls:
So of course, now I want to move to the desert and start my own Alien cult...the other American dream.
I wish Darin would stop convincing Brett to eat the scenery:
2. Bombshell Betty's Pin-Up Class was a ton of fun and an unexpected workout! (I think I'm going to break my whole song-month-theme for this blog entry. Didn't last long did it?) Sucking it in and rapidly moving from cheesecake pose to cheesecake pose proved to be quite aerobic. The class ended with a photo shoot (Yeay! Joe Niem!). I haven't seen the photos yet, but I'll post them when I get them. I did manage to steal a few pictures of the super cute Sweetcheeks on my own camera:
And me and Joe and Sweetcheeks.
3. Day at the Races with Mr. Lucky! I never thought I'd find myself at beautiful downtown San Mateo's Bay Meadows Race Track, but what an interesting afternoon!
This is not our car, by the way.
4. And there was also a UFO West in September! Freakout!
I am always destined to be sweaty in a UFO picture!

Anton thought that we needed a theme for the housewarming so the food would be tied together in some form of unity. I came up with the theme: "candy that looks like other foods," but I guess that's not what he had in mind. Brett arranged these very nicely.
Out at the fire (before we got busted -- they ARE patrolling for glass bottles and alcohol):
After we got busted:
Daniels creation: little Bernie Man.
The next day, Brett and I went out to survey the damage:
Not so bad at all!
And then we walked around the beach...
We found this cave towards the Cliff House. Remarkably, there wasn't anything gross in there. Does anyone know if the cave has a name?
Obligatory Maggie photo of the week:
