Everyday of this Weekend, we got you covered!

Friday is New Years at The Mile High Club! It’s free and it’s a party so come on down around 10pm!

Saturday at Bottom of the Hill: it’s The Flakes and The 5,6,7,8’s! Also with The Bobbyteens and The Fevers!

Sunday, good ol’ Chris France (known to most of you as Sailor Billy) is shooting the last scene needed for his film. AND he needs extras to be at The Mile High Club @ 1pm. You can email him for more details at notsotemporaryinsanity@hotmail.com.

It’s that no-man’s-land time of the year.
The week between Xmas and New Years seems to belong to neither this year nor the next. It’s this odd limbo state where people float by your desk and say “Happy Holidays,” but then you go outside and already see abandoned Christmas trees in the gutter. (BTW, how come nobody ever sets those on fire? I can’t be the only one who thinks about that…little bonfires every three houses…Nice!)

There’s a lot to look forward to in January (the Tahoe hot-tub getaway with the East Bay gang) and some stuff I’m not looking too forward to (surgical procedure…bleeach!) and lots of plans and ideas for upcoming events and shows.

But for now, it’s time to get all introspective and shit…Does anyone really deserve cancer? Do my super-human powers have limits? Why is it that no matter what I manage to accomplish, I can’t seem to get over the rejections that people have dealt me? Is that related to a vitamin deficiency? Do I need more or less Prozac? Why does my coat smell like wet dog?

It’s also time to reflect on the words of others:

QUOTES OF THE YEAR:

“We have same DNA!” – Aunt Lucy

“Those laugh lines made me think you were older” – Guy in bar

“L.A. is full of Jews.” – Zeus, in conversation at our 10 year reunion.

“This is so cool…it’s the Scott Peterson/Amber Frey tour of Fresno!” - Brett, whilst in Fresno for my 10 year reunion.

“It’s not like anyone reads it.” -- Someone at work about the newsletter I produce for the department.

“…who runs SpeakEasily with the sass and self-deprecation of Carol Burnett in a blond wig.” –
The Chronicle about Odessa Lil.

“I want a press conference.” – Sailor Billy

“Sobriety is like ketchup…it goes so well with everything.” - Clive

AND it’s time for me to give YOU this nice collection of fun LINKS (yep, it’s been a while since I did that) to enjoy…and no, you can not return them for a refund.

BLORT!
Although I’m a huge Mad Magazine fan, Don Martin’s drawing have always freaked me out. It’s the floppy shoe, I think. But this
Don Martin Onomonopiac Dictionary is pretty rad!

One of my favorite people to look at online, Bianca Abel, has added a new galary to her website of herself in Josephine Baker-face! These pictures are quite outstanding.

Sta-Prest!
Dig this groovy collection of
1960’s trouser ads.

This blogger writes about stuff he eats that no one should eat…like Urkel-O's cereal and Beggin' Strips dog food.

O Silent Night, O Deadly Night
In this hollandaise seasoning, allow me to thank HE who collects art in heaven for the invention of the B MOVIE! Yes, December 28th is the official release date of Evil Eyes, a movie I managed to mooch a bit role in as Udo Kier’s secretary! I mean EVIL secretary!
I saw the DVD for the first time last night (thanks to Eric Caselton and Jose). Mark Atkins did a great job with the cinematography, but unfortunately he did not edit the film. There were some odd choices made in the editing, but all in all it is a fun, gross, good time. Adam Baldwin and Udo Kier make the movie worth watching despite the chock-full-o-holes plot (editing again?). AND I’m really proud of Eric who totally holds his own as an actor alongside B Giants Kier and Baldwin. Eric’s got a good future in schlock.
And me? Underneath all that quasi-goth make-up is a real face…I think. There’s more of me in the blooper reel (DVD extras) than in the film proper, but I think I make a believable secretary of Satan.
WHOA! Evil Eyes is available on Netflix too!

SpeakEasily in the news:
WOW! We're in the Style section of today's Chronicle! If you can't run out and get a paper right now, read it online here! There's some great pictures of our regular gang of performers and regulars as well. NICE!

Lofty Ambitions in Fresno! Hey, I went to high school with Reza! I guess Fresno is going the way of the loft. Why not?

12.15.2004

Can't figure out what to do on New Years? Why chose? Let me chose for you:
Don't be BORED on New Years. Let's play some BOARD games, dance, and drink a bunch at The Mile High December 31st - January 1st. That club deserves a party, seeing as how it is the last official night and all.
And it's FREE. And it starts at 10pm. And it's just a party! There probably won't be any NUDE WOMEN. Scrabble may take the place of DEATH DEFYING ACTS. Cool DJs will be spinning all our schizoid favorites instead of some LIVE BAND. I know our own Lisa Nola will be DJing as well as good 'ol Brett (of The Flakes fame) and a few other people of fine taste too...but I can't remember who. THAT's how relaxed this event is! I WILL NOT be Mistress of Ceremony-ing, but I will be bringing the board games. MAD MAGAZINE GAME anyone? OH YES! Please bring your own games to add to the fun too.

Directions here:
http://www.oaklandmilehigh.com

Here's what Lisa says:
New Years Eve Party @ The Mile High Club
* Nothing Fancy but Your Clothes
* We're Free
You + DJs + Dancing + Spirits + Good Times
10pm and right into 2005

We are uncertain where the mile high will be in 2005
but we will be open here and there. We do, however,
want to celebrate these past 6 months with friends all
around...so please join us if you can.

What it's all about:
Pat McCarthy captured many of the finest moments from last SpeakEasily- a virtual play by play of shtick, T&A, and the beautiful fezed people. This is what it's all about, people.

and in other news...
The Chanukah vs Hanukah debate lives on:
Both my sister and Jim sent this to me today: Hanukah-Heyya. You've probably seen it a million times too, but why not again since we're nearing the end of this year's festival of lights?

Friday I was part of another Fierce Couture fashion show. This one was part of The Rickshaw Stop's Club ID and involved The Peels and Sean Allen Fenn in some way. After hours of make-up and having my hair ratted to un-g_dly rat-tastic heights , my part was easy...hang out with various fetish models back stage (including the fascinatingly hyper KumiMonster), put on some awesome space clothes, and then try to model through a crowd of drunken 80's kids. As soon as that part was over and the latex was peeled off, I had to jump in a cab and go over to the Parkside to see Cracker Jack Salteen, Phantom Surfers, and The Bippies!
I missed Salty, but I did walk in just in time to see The Bippies setting up. (I hear Jack killed, though.) My hair was still huge and Brett didn't recognize me, even though I was wearing a shirt he gave me. Later when he figured out it was me, he said that I should keep my hair like that. While they were playing and Russell was hitting his head with a tambourine, a fellow at the bar (who was a little sloshed) tried to guess my age:
"I'm a lawyer and so I'm real good at reading people. I can tell you everything about you."
"Uhm, uh-huh."
"Like you're probably about 34, right?"
"Uhm, no."
"33?"
"Uhm, younger."
"32?"
"I'm 28!"
"Oh? Those laugh lines made me think older."
That's a good one, boys. Don't forget that while trying to score a few points next time out at the bar.
Saturday was The Flakes show at The Mile High. It's really going to be a shame to see that place go! But each time we go, we're all creating great memories...like the one moment during The Flakes show that everyone went ape-shit. Brett says it happens at everyone of their shows and he's probably right. All at once everyone lost their minds: beer can tap shoes, broken ornaments, weird fans going right up to the stage and making faces at the band...it was a good way to end the night.

12.09.2004

But wait, there's more:
Lisa's photos from the So-Long Oakland Fez Fiesta at SpeakEasily!
These really say it all!

ALSO, Friday night I'll be doing another fashion show for Fierce Couture at the Rickshaw Stop. Here's the info.
BUT, meanwhile it's HIROSHIMANIA! at Thee Parkside: The Bippies, Phantom Surfers, Adam Carlson Band, and our own Cracker Jack Salteen, all in honor of Hiroshi of The Poontang Wranglers! I'm going to try to catch the last 30 seconds of it all if I'm lucky.
AND, one can see Salteen's nice twin brother play with The Flakes at The Mile High on Saturday.
And then I hibernate.

A friend just called and said he was really drunk and felt like he was going to throw up. I wanted to help but he's about 2,900 miles away.

12.08.2004

I just wanted to say a big huge gigantic thanks for making last night's So-Long Mile High SpeakEasily the best Nouveau-Vaudeville happening it could be. The spirit of SpeakEasily was certainly alive.
AND what can I say about the awesome presents from the Meter Dancers? I was touched...in a way I'd rather not be touched. Haw haw haw. But does anyone know who put cake icing all over the pair of merkin-esque underwear?
I'm still recovering from last night, but Brett and I were able to get his disposable camera processed today and below are a few good ones (note Brett's thumb in a couple). More to come real soon!
ALSO...check out the low-tech SpeakEasily website.

Happy Birthday to Lisa and Ali and everyone else who got on stage! One guy showed me his drivers license to prove that it was his birthday.

The volunteer Kazoo Orchestra.

Bombshell Betty and Kingfish.

Tippy Canoe and Sailor Billy.

Rose Pistola and Sailor Billy...or is it Sailor Billy and Rose Pistola?

Odessa Lil and Jack Salteen...or is it just Audra and Brett?

...AND because the interweb is working, I can watch The Flake's video that Guerilla Monster Films made! See them almost get their hair cut!
Ah, the luxury of using the home computer at home.
After months of hoping my Dell would be reborn into an iMac G5 while I ignored it in it’s virus-ridden mess, I finally took a step in a direction. Last night I called my sister. I put it off because I have vivid memories of receiving piano lessons from her as a kid that literally hurt. But she knows her computer stuff and she stayed up late with me to show me how to look for Spyware in my startup menu. (Yeay! Thanks!) She said, “Call back tomorrow and we’ll start step 2.” Easy enough, but the Spywares kept reinstalling themselves…I’d cut down one and two would grow in its place! That was around 10:30pm.
Come 4:00am I pretty much had the situation under control…I reinstalled Windows, screwed around in the registry, and downloaded a Spyware killer (Ad-ware SE). I’ve won the battle and now I can check my email again…oh, only 326 messages in my audrawolfmann.net email account. Why did I want to fix my computer?

11.19.2004

There will be a celebration in honor of Sunny (AKA Mia Moore) at El Rio on Tuesday. Please see the Big Burlesque page for more information.

Lately there’s been a lot of bad news dealt out.
I recently found out that I am going to have some pretty annoying medical stuff to deal with. Things need to be removed, fingers need to be crossed. It won’t be anything serious in the long run, but it’s definitely the kind of thing that makes you think twice about your invincibility. Everyone I've talked to about this has been so helpfull in getting me to put my head back on straight again. Thanks so much!

When the going gets tragic, I generally burry myself in movies. This Sunday, the Balboa Theater and Harold Lloyd's granddaughter Suzanne Lloyd present a screening of his 1932 film MOVIE CRAZY. What a direct route to escapism!

11.18.2004

Terrible.
I've just heard that Sunny did not make it. This woman was a power house, so full of life and charm. It was truely an honor to have worked with her.

11.12.2004

Attention Ladies and Gentlekin!
It appears as though we’ve reached the end of a short but golden era for ol’ Oaktown. After a lively run, the owners of The Mile High Club have decided to pass on the torch and go on to other vistas. What does this mean for SpeakEasily, Odessa Lil, and The Mile High Dancers? Two more shows at our home base! November 16th and December 7th (our big HOLIDAY AND SO-LONG OAKLAND SHOW AND FEZ NIGHT)! Make sure you’re there to send us off in style! I’m sure we’ll reemerge somewhere sometime soon at a dive near you, but until then:

SPEAKEASILY, Tuesday November 16th!

THE DOPPLER TRIO
It's like Thelonious Monk goes to Macedonia on a Klezmer-driven spaceship! Outta sight!
THE INDRA - Nouveau-Vaudeville's own beauty queen!
THE CHAINSAW CHUBETTES - A bruised and brassy burlesque duet from San Fransiceee, will transport you to the gritty streets of Weimar Berlin!

Next year in Jerusalem! (But not really), ~Odessa Lil~

11.08.2004

Is there ever a back to normal?
It seems that things may be calming down from the whirlwind activity of the Halloween season. Forget Xmas and Chanukah and all that garbage; this October was officially the season of no return. There were lots of big shows and lots of big news and even a 10-year high school reunion to go to! After all of that, holiday shopping is going to be like a walk in an overpriced and frenzied park.
Besides the weekly SpeakEasilys, there was also:
A fashion show for an awesome fetish designer. That show turned my hair dark, but I’m starting to like that slowly but surely.
A crazy Mexican wrestling bonanza called Lucha VaVoom in which I got to be a ring girl and escort the pink-pride wrestler Rosa Salvaje to his victorious match. (Does anyone have any picture of this?! The Indra lent me one of her beautiful showgirl gowns and I’ll probably never get to wear anything like that again! AND when am I going to see Bethanne escort two midgets again?!)
Lee Press on and the Nails final show at Rancho Nicasio! Thanks again to The Indra for rallying up the 2004 Olympic Apache Team. We KILLED in Marin. (How much milage can I get out of that joke? Billy, shut up.) AND we got to drive up there in Miss Lynda's hearse! Oh yes!
AND…on Halloween was Spectacular Spectacular at the DNA Lounge. The place was packed with a crowd who take Halloween VERY seriously, as only San Franciscan’s do. The show, which included a hot dog bun stage fire, The Adorable Doctor Phibes, The Cabinet of Doctor Calamari, and me as a RABID POODLE foaming Emergen-C at the mouth, was a success and I’m looking forward to our cast party this weekend. I might not use any Emergen-C for a while, though. Here’s some photographic evidence of the freak fest:

We the glamorous, pre-show.

Miss Eva Von Slut as Lady Arfington and me in poodle pants.

Gorilla X and Gorilla XX.

After all that, going to my 10-year high school reunion seemed rather tame. It’s really a fortunate thing that I had no time to think (keep moving! Like a shark! Look over there!) because otherwise I might have gotten all squirrely about the reunion. Bullard Knights can do that to a gal. But honestly, besides the racial-slur-hurling LCDs (Lowest Common Denominators) and the usual dramas, high school wasn’t all that bad for me. I really had nothing to prove to anyone. In fact, I found myself just giving partial answers to anyone who actually bothered to ask what I was up to. The friends I had planned to go with couldn’t make it, but I dragged Brett along and he kept me laughing and drinking and sane the whole night. I reconnected with a few people I was very happy to see. The rest had either become bloated or bald. By 11pm, I was ready to go.

Oh, there is other BIG news as well…but I’ll get to that later. For now, I think I’ll leave work and ponder my future at the gym.

THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, 1928. Dir. Paul Leni
With Conrad Veidt, Mary Philbin, and Olga Baclanova (of FREAKS fame).

This gloomy piece of Germans-gone-California expressionism stars
Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine – an orphan who has been disfigured with an
eternal smile by a maiming band of gypsies and the corrupt court of
England. He finds refuge and love in a traveling sideshow, but then
his true royal lineage is revealed, taking him from his people. Learn
about life, love, and the art of hiding behind scarves, with Veidt in
this creepy forgotten classic.

Just $3. Movie starts at 9pm!
Save room for tater tots! We've got a new chef!

AND DON'T FORGET: all the SpeakEasily craziness is back October 19th!
Don't miss Project: Pimento (the swingingest theremin band around),

10.06.2004

I truly am a lucky bastage to have so many talented people help me pull off a Tuesday night when I’ve come down with the flu, or a cold, or the plague, or whatever the heck this is. Cracker Jack Salteen and Sailor Billy stepped in at the last minute to steer the SpeakEasily ship last night while I sat incognito in a darkened corner, alternately blowing my nose and rasping out orders that no one listened to. And the show was great! Thanks again everybody. I thanked everyone so much at the end of the evening that I’ve pretty much lost my voice…at least it gives me an excuse to not talk to anyone at work. But seriously folks, Sheah and Hot and Bothered played two great sets and got people out on the dance floor…even Sheah, who joined Rose Pistola for an impromptu chair dance during an instrumental. Cherry Lix amazed us with her glittery and virtuosic dance number…wotta dancer! Amber Lox performed FOR HER FIRST TIME EVER but she was so good that we just don’t believe that. AND Bombshell Betty and Sweet Cheeks premiered a horserace number that was…well, RACY! Oh, and I can’t forget Riff Ditties and Cracker Jack Salteen’s punkrawk uke duo. We hear that they’re getting married next June.

There’s too much great stuff coming up in October and so razor blades to stick in candy apples that there’s just no time to get sick. I won’t overwhelm you with the long list now, but this weekend is Doug’s Cabaret Verdalet at Ruby Sky! Sailor Billy, Rose Pistola, and I will be helping The Indra with her famous High Body Count Apache Dance 2004. I have to get better so The Indra can stab me to death! Where’s the Vitamin C?!

BTW, does anyone know anyone who wants to help me fix my home computer? It’s totally rotten to the core and moves so slowly that I can’t even bear to send an email.(Apologies to those who haven’t heard from me…I have to use the connection at work.) Let me know.

Good ol’ Pat McCarthy caught the best of last Tuesday, September 28th, staring Tippy Canoe and the Paddleman, The Flying Fox, and Bombshell Betty’s Burlesque Bonanza!

The Flying Fox is a royal tease.

Tippy Canoe and the Paddleman are flying fox hunt’n.

Riff Ditties and Bombshell Betty get tropical.

And Sweet Cheeks goes wild.

We love our regulars.

It’s official! TUESDAY is the new Friday!

But what would a night at SpeakEasily be without a sailor?! CRACKER JACK SALTEEN is dropping in! Did The Ramones and Rudy Vallee have a lovechild?
AND a special appearance by MR. MYSTIC! Beware: he might hypnotize you into buying him a drink.

If You Weren't There Last Night:
Once again, The Indra thoroughly dazzled the SpeakEasily patrons with her gorilla striptease (Insert “going bananas” type joke here) AND led her now-famous Mile High Body Count Apache Dance starring the 2004 Olympic Apache Team (hurray Chris, AKA Dirty Pierre). Like any good Shakespearean death scene (thanks for that analogy, Joe), there was a nice pile of bodies at the end. At this point, it’s like “who cares about the audience…we just want to get stabbed by The Indra and play dead!” The Indra always goes the extra 10 miles with her creativity! I’m such a lucky bastage (farging ice hole?) to know her!
MR. MYSTIC hypnotized a cute member of the audience to kiss him (abusing his powers?) and did a remarkably good Woody Allen-doing-a-card-trick impersonation. AND of course, Gaucho made the meter dancers tear it up on the dance floor. We like those dudes.

Raised By Wolfmanns Dept.:
Melissa is on a one sister mission to out my childhood on her blog.
Here's her latest installment:
The unhealthy attachment to Ted E. Bear:

8.24.2004

He says the darndest things:
I say, “I’m so freaking tired. I can’t do this any more. Let’s move to the country.”
And he says, “And then open a dinner theater?”

8.23.2004

Wowsers. After Friday's marathon findraiser for the SOMArts, Saturday's Nanos Operetta's Three Drops of Blood show, and the Spec Spec cast party, Sunday became the day that never was. A short nap turned into a 5-hour-long coma-thon. What are you supposed to do when you wake up and it's bedtime again? I hope "take an Ativan" is the correct answer.

WHOOOPS!
It seems as though the email list from last week's SpeakEasily was lost in the bar somehow. If anyone was on that list and wants to be added, please contact me so I can begin harassing you as planned! SpeakEasily@Gmail.

Check it out, Yo. More Photos:
Thank so much to Daniel and InterNebbish for catching those Kodak moments over at SpeakEasily.
Here are just a few that Daniel took...I promise that they'll make it onto the SpeakEasily website soon enough.

Odessa Lil and Daniel Martinez.

The Indra sews Billy back together while Rose Pistola looks on.

"Did I leave the water running?"

Rose Pistola has her shoulder examined by Doktor Odessa, while Salty makes tinfoil sculptures in order to illustrate an important point in his conversation.

Internebbish's photos: (to see them all go here.)

Captain Willy charms the ladies (and charges by the dance).

Tippy Canoe and the Paddleman!

Odessa says solong to an old friend. Note his T-shirt. You can buy one too.

Bombshell Betty seems to have found something!

This Tuesday, August 24—
The joint will be jumping this Tuesday as SpeakEasily welcomes gypsyjazz geniuses GAUCHO to our fold! This band is hot stuff! And How!Their Django-rific sound will make you fight for territory on thedance floor. We may annex France for more space.
Speaking of France, THE INDRA will be with us as well with her one-and-only SpeakEasily High Body Count Apache Dance! Yes, she'll kill Billy again and G-D knows who else.
AND as if that wasn't enough, MR. MYSTIC will astound and amaze youwith whatever it is up his sleeves!
AND, of course, THE MILE HIGH METER DANCERS, those ravishing rowdyrabble rousers, can be all yours for the duration of a song (inexchange for just a few bucks tucked discreetly in a garter or perhaps in a more creative place). They are professionals!

THE PICTURES ARE FUN ENTRY:

You know, you let some people have access to a stage and sometimes it results in nuclear fall out:

The Spectacular Spectacular show pictures are up...hurray!
And look! It's Sailor Billy from SpeakEasily:

Rose was there too, as a native in gold heels. Hey, it could happen...in the parallel universe where sailors go-go dance and leaders of rock bands wear my uncle's fez.

I have approximately a bagillion things I gotta do right now including phone calls I'd like to make, shtick that needs to get written, SLEEP that needs to get slept, unearthing my apartment...but blogging seems to be the only reasonable thing to do right now. That, and watching The Family Guy, but I already did that.
Tomorrow Steven and Ryan are coming over to record a commentary track for the upcoming The Breathing Show DVD. It's getting distribution from FilmThreat! Yeah!
And then you can rent it on Netflix, ok?
The fact that Steve and Ryan are coming by means I need to make the car hole look like a human lives here; not one cat and a trash-collecting monkey.

Last night's SpeakEasily was another artistic triumph! And the people...they came out! And Roky Roulette...he stripped on a pogo stick! And the Lollies...were feathery and beautiful! And Kitten and Mr. Tinkler were the best duo since Tony Orlando and Dawn or maybe even peanutbutter and jelly. These folks are seriously libraries of prohibition song info!
Lots of familiar faces were there and a few new ones too. It all warms my heart and makes my head feel gooshie (i mean that in a good way). I may have even recruited a couple of new Meter Dancers.

OK! Don't forget this Friday is a SpeakEasily event in part with SomArts Cultural Center and ARTworkSF called The Cafe Show at SomArts Bay Gallery (934 Brannan St @ 9th, SF). Odessa Lil will be there shaking babies and kissing hands (and stealing material, obviously).

AND

Next Tuesday is always just around the corner!
